overview

Increasing demand to speedily take products and services to the market in the face of intense competition has made it even more challenging for organizations to meet their business goals. As a result it has become much more important to deploy complex applications in order to ensure system robustness and scalability to meet growing demand. We already know, understand and acknowledge the concepts and principles but may or may not be following them. I will explain about how we started developing software in 80s-90s and ended up with today's state. And whatever DevOps is telling is something we used to do long back. The technical practices recommended in DevOps Handbook were being followed by practitioners but may be with a different name, will explain one or two of them. Finally what we are doing to bring the DevOps disruption in our organization, a quick 3 minutes video. - Sanjay Saini, ,

As organizations embrace DevOps, we need to take a pause and think about the need for DevOps. The answer lies in the business objective you want to achieve. All your DevOps activities need to be aligned to achieve this objective and you should constantly monitor your progress against this objective.

This session explores some common business objectives experienced in the industry and how DevOps goals can be aligned to them. The session then discusses the five dimensions of DevOps and how capabilities around these can lead to DevOps goals achievement. A model is then discussed to plan organizational development path to achieve DevOps maturity. - Harish Nanda, Chief Architect, NIIT Technologies Limited
The delivery velocity offered by DevOps is one of the most fundamental drivers of IT's shift to this new mode of software development and delivery. However if an organization does not effectively account for quality assurance in its DevOps initiative, it's missing half the point. DevOps practices are intended to not only increase the speed of delivering feature releases but it also plays an important role in improving the overall quality. In the end it isn't just about continuous delivery, but overall continuous improvement of delivered software as well.

However, with DevOps emphasis on an automated pipeline, it's clear that the traditional means of testing will no longer be effective in achieving quality. Based on our experience and assessment of different enterprises separate QA organizations with teams of testers performing their testing during specified test phases is soon becoming redundant. And organizations that do not quickly transform their testing teams to align with this new paradigm will soon become archaic.

We believe there is still an important role for testing professionals in the era of DevOps however they need to adapt to a rewritten organizational framework —and a completely different mindset about testing objectives.
- Ashwini Sukhwani, Director, NTT Data Services
In a capricious eco system where disruption is the new constant and technology advancement is surfacing more rapidly than ever before, we can all agree that DevOps has become the need of hour for survival of all IT organizations and IT functions. Better team work, seamless handshakes between development and operations, greater agility and faster time to delivery with increased quality for customers – are all such benefits. However DevOps is not just a set of automations and superficial boundary dilutions at the tactical layer, success of DevOps lays its foundation in a strong and active involvement of leadership.

The talk aims to discuss how we can ensure that this enabler at strategic level is set in such a way that the success of DevOps constructs incrementally and is sustainable. It would cover aspects like:
  • Key considerations to explore your leadership’s role & readiness for DevOps
  • Strategic focus areas that can propel DevOps adoption
  • Mindset and cultural changes that need to be promoted for successful DevOps deployment
  • Tips with Do’s and Don’ts around leadership involvement for DevOps
- Deepak Chopra, VP - Lean Digital Transformation Team, GENPACT
The session will be starting with understanding the DevOps and its different definitions. From there we will understand the common aspects and key characteristics of DevOps. We shall also look at the what DevOps is NOT.

From there we shall look at key emerging trends of the DevOps as follows:

1.    What do we mean by going back to basics and its relevance
2.    Moving from 3 point continuity to 5 point continuity for effective DevOps
3.    How testers are changing and improving in the world of DevOps
4.    How ITOps is evolving and making their life simpler
5.    How metrics will become extremely relevant for business
6.    How Serverless computing is benefiting to DevOps
7.    Feedback from different levels of SDLC has advanced in time
8.    Databases deployments are taking key focus
9.    Security is becoming the critical aspect
10.    Orchestrating tools for the containerized deployment

Closing with what we should do from here on.

Business are demanding ever shorter release cycles for new applications.Traditionally ‘Operations’ is seen as a barrier with lengthy bureaucratic controls and delays in provisioning production systems. DevOps is a growing movement for shortening development and deployment and integrating Development and Operations. However this requires a mindset shift, new behaviors and a cultural shift in both Development and Operations. Traditionally suspicious of each other, they must now work closely together. Yet many companies are struggling to adopt and deploy DevOps and how to change the culture.

Gamification - The Phoenix Project: The simulation game is based upon ‘The Phoenix Project’ Book. Parts Unlimited is in trouble. The only way forward to not only save the company but to make it competitive and profitable is “The Phoenix Project” which represents an IT enabled business transformation, with Retail Operations as the business owner of this project. The VP of IT Operations is asked to take the lead of the IT department and ensure that “The Phoenix Project” will be a success. But the VP of IT Operations is facing a tremendous amount of work. A huge backlogs of issues, features and projects.

Your team will act in different roles within the Parts Unlimited organization. You can be Retail Operations, Human Resources or Finance –playing the Business roles of the company. Or you can be the VP of IT Operations or other members from his IT Team that needs to develop the applications and solve the IT Issues. - Suresh GP, Founder & Managing Director, TaUB Solutions
